Considering that two weeks ago, when my dad was visiting, it was so gross and hot and humid we had to turn on the Big Air Conditioner that I never use, fall has landed with a thud. It’s cold in here! I’d been meaning to turn off the radiator in the maid’s room* before the heat came up – I did that yesterday (I think), and it’s clear the heat could happen at any moment. (*back when this apartment building was built, people had live-in maids. I do not, but that is the name of the smallest room in the house, which has a powder room, a washer/dryer, a fold-out sofa and bookshelves with various kitchen equipment and random crap on them. I also have a ‘butler’s pantry’.)
I’m fine with the temperature change, but I do need to either buy a new heavy blanket for the bed or go back to using the comforter with the duvet that doesn’t fit and you have to safety-pin it. Wait, is the comforter the blanket part or the cover? (*goes to look*) OK, what I have is a duvet with a cover, and maybe I need a comforter (or just a blanket) instead. I also need (or could use) a better bedspread for the guest room, new bathtowels and so on. Time for a shopping trip.
I’ve been cooking! Last Sunday, I actually did the ‘review the fridge and plan the meals, then go to the farmer’s market and grocery store’ thing that I should be doing every week. I used up the chicken I’d had in the freezer – one salad, one ‘pasta primavera’ which came out pretty good. I made hamburgers. I ‘made’ green beans from the farmer’s market. (Oh, when you snap off the ends, do you have to do both ends, or just the end with the stem? I think it’s just the stem end.) I made oatmeal. I made a frittata.
Not sure if I’m going to do another planning session today – we’re being hit with really bad weather. I might zoom out to the farmer’s market (every Sunday, a block away) just to dump my composting. Oh, this is a weird thing – our building complex has compost bins, and rules around them so you need to be ‘trained’ on how to use them, but I did that, and have started to save my coffee grounds and such. And just as I got into the routine, they sent out an email saying that the bins were ‘closed for maintenance’. (Did I break them? How do you break a compost bin?) So now I have to wait until Sunday, when the farmer’s market has compost bins. Also, the more I cook, the more compost I end up with (I also cleaned my fridge and dumped some old olives and stuff), so I might need a bigger dedicated kitchen bucket. Anyway, this is my domestic life now.
My birthday is tomorrow. I’m not excited about it – it’s not a big-zero birthday, and it’s on a Monday. Nevertheless, I have PLANS. I have a ticket to Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway – a show that has a permanent place in my heart, as it’s one of those shows that grabbed me in such a way that I listened to the OCR every day for about six months. I’ve seen… lessee… oh, just two productions of it before, but not in decades. And I have a dinner reservation at a restaurant before. (The show is at 8:00! on a Monday! this is madness). So the day itself will be just a day at the office until 5:00 or so. Tuesday morning, maybe I’ll go for a belated birthday breakfast at the local diner.
I feel like there’s more to blah-blah-blah about, but can’t think of much of anything. I watched Jagged Edge last night, a movie I hadn’t seen in a long time. Notable for one courtroom scene where Glenn Close magically appears in multiple dresses (I can hear C shrieking “continuity!”). It’s good, but of its time, and it’s kind of startling to see a strong actress like Close playing a woman who’s kind of stereotypically fluttery-helpless-woman, even though she’s a kickass lawyer.
Next weekend I can start with the Spooky October stuff. I was not in the mood last year, but am looking forward to it this year.
Enjoy your pumpkin spice lattes and mulled cider!
