Oh, don’t come after me, it’s a joke. A day of lesbians and drag queens.
Sunday, I wanted to see three shows – a drag brunch, a lesbian comedy set, and another drag revue. I’d eyed the drag brunch at 11:00, but it was sold out! (I was buying tickets online from the comfort of my room.) So signed up for the 1:00 one, and spent the morning just putzing around in the room, and taking a short walk.
The drag brunch was at the Crown & Anchor, and was quite pricey, but really well done. The queens all did their own singing and not only performed for us in the restaurant, but went outside to the courtyard to those patrons as well. I actually don’t remember what they sang – oh, wait, they did several numbers from “Chicago”, and … well, other stuff, but it was all really good. As far as the brunch, you had a $25 minimum (on top of the $25 ticket), but I didn’t have any problem going over that, with two mimosas and a ‘hangover bowl’ (grits and eggs and short rib and stuff) and a biscuit. So… pricey, but yummy – and fun.
Back to the room for refreshment and a nap. I decided once again not to go to tea dance – just leisurely strolled back to the Red Room to see the 530 show (Mimi Gonzalez and Jennie McNulty). Two lesbian comedians who traded sets, did a funny sketch about the very first women’s weekend (Pilgrims!) and then improved a scene using sentences that the audience had written on cards. All of it was pleasant without being rip-roaringly funny – although MG did have a very interesting take. She had a big riff on Catholicism, but said everyone’s going to be surprised when they actually meet God and find out God doesn’t have a body (and therefore is probably ‘they/them’). And that your job is to live life so God can look through your body and be entertained. That was a resonant idea I need to think about.
I had about an hour to kill before the next show, and ended up at the Underground Bar, a dive bar which I’d passed a couple of times. There was no one there except a male couple deep in conversation with the dyke bartender. I just sat in peace and had a ginger ale.
Then back to the Post Office Cafe to see the “Illusions” show. This was a lot of fun, and sometimes the ‘illusions’ were more obvious than others (Dolly Parton, for instance, and there was a very funny bit where Dolly was singing “I Will Always Love You” and Whitney Houston came in behind her and sort of railroaded her out of the way). I’m not a big fan of lip-synching in general – a lot of the times the queens will get big hands for what are musical moments which they are not delivering themselves. But lip-synching can be its own thing too, and my favorite moment was when one queen did my favorite Celine song, “It’s All Coming Back to Me” – but did it in a very funny way, with a lot of lip quivering and so on. That was a hoot and definitely more, and more interesting, than your average lipsynch.
Afterward, I ducked into the Mayflower for a quick dinner before they closed – as I expected, got served twice as much food as I wanted to eat, and there was no point in them wrapping it up for me, oh well. On the way back, I was thinking of stopping into the Boat Slip for one last drink, but they were closed already, oh well.
And that was it for fun times!
Right now, I’ve packed, had breakfast and am vamping until heading off to the pier for the ferry. I get to ride on a boat and a plane today!
This was not exactly the trip I had in my head, but I really didn’t plan it much, took it as it came. And I learned a long time ago not to ‘grade myself’ on a vacation, fer gosh sakes.
But I think I probably won’t redo this trip exactly – probably next time I come, it will either be with people (or with plans to get together with people), or for a specific event, like one of the Bear events. But I do like it here and certainly got to enjoy the lovely atmosphere, the shopping and long walks, the food and all those shows – those will be here when I come back.
