When I was in fourth grade or so, I wrote an essay about the model airplanes I built. And it pretty much read like, “first I did an American Airlines DC-10. And then I did a Pan AM 747. And then I did a Delta 727. And then….” And I got it back from the teacher saying, “just listing them like this isn’t interesting. You should be telling us how you built the models” or whatever.
Usually, when I write a blog post, I write it pretty much as it will end up appearing, and then go through and tweak it before posting it. But twice now in the last week I’ve written for 45 minutes or so and then looked at what I wrote and went, ‘this is just another model airplane essay, isn’t it’.
So I guess I need to either not write about all the events of the last few weeks, or stop a bit and think about each one and figure out what I want to say about it that’s worthwhile reading. Yes, I would like to post a review of the excellent A Little Night Music I saw last weekend, but no one but me cares that I’ve done the show myself three times and what each of those productions was like and … well, nuggets of interestingness can be extracted, but maybe not detailing the whole thing. I’ll save the long-winded boring reminiscences for when I’m old. Oh, wait…
So… I recognize the value of writing a crappy first draft, which is infinitely better than writing nothing. But I need to do a bit more planning before tackling the second draft.
I’m looking forward to the three-day weekend. Three-and-a-half actually, since we start Summer Fridays (Fri-yay!) tomorrow. It’s going to be totally about household projects, although I might sneak away to go see Sinners at some point – it seems to be quite the thing.
