So… sometimes I pull my back. It’s always the same muscle, it’s on the left. And it makes things ouchy and I can’t bend over (shut up) and it takes a few days to recover.
Last week, I pulled my back simply by going to work. I sat down on the subway. We pulled into Rockefeller Center. I stood up. Aaaaaugh! Ouched my way to the office, and through the day. It got better, and not in-my-way, until Saturday, when I started doing laundry, when it flared up so badly I needed to go get kitchen tongs to be able to get the clothes off the floor.
So that was annoying. I really did want to go to the No Kings protest in Manhattan.
Since then, it’s gotten more or less ouchy as the days have gone by, and yesterday my left leg decided to get in on the action, and even my right foot for a while. WTF. Yes, yes, I know, if I did stretching with any regularity, that sort of thing wouldn’t happen.
Sunday I mostly sat around and read and ouched, but I did call my dad. We had a great long talk, particularly about books. I was surprised and delighted to find out that he’d read a FB post of mine and read the gay detective books where the hero’s father’s name is the same as his. He liked them!
I have today off (for Juneteenth, although I’m not doing anything particularly Juneteenthy – *mild shame*) and I took tomorrow off too, so four-day weekend. I had mapped out quite a few things I needed and wanted to do. Dinner with the G&S crowd on Monday, a production of Musical Comedy Murders on Wednesday, the QUO concert on Saturday. And my buddy Marisa is MD’ing Rent out in Morristown, and hinted very strongly that I should come to that, so bought a ticket for the closing performance on Sunday.
well… I’m not (supposed to be) playing in this weekend’s QUO concert, but I had subbed for Lynn in the last two rehearsals. And Monday I get a text from Kyle, the principal horn, who said he had COVID and could I sub for the dress rehearsal and maybe the concert? Eek! Yes, of course, I could, but… a rehearsal where you’re covering inner parts and know you won’t have to perform them, and a rehearsal where you’re playing the principal parts and might have to perform them with little prep are different animals. So… time to practice. Also to reschedule Musical Comedy Murders.
So I practiced on Monday before heading into town to meet up with the G&S crowd. M&O, a married couple from London, were in town, and we were all meeting at Tony’s di Napoli. I don’t think I’d ever been, but I’ve been to Carmine’s and it’s the same sort of deal – family-style Italian for tourists (which is not to say it’s bad, it’s very good). So we all had a great time, even though M was feeling under the weather.
And then we got an email on Tuesday that M had COVID! Wow! So, I guess COVID is still a thing, be careful out there. And I’d been sitting and chatting with M for quite a while. I made sure I tested before going into the office yesterday, and then off to dress rehearsal for the QUO concert, which went very well. As Kyle’s sub, I had several solos I hadn’t played before, but only one was panicky and not-good. The conductor wanted to run over it again, but I told her not to waste her time, with luck, I won’t be performing it on Saturday. (Kyle is feeling fine and we have our fingers crossed he’ll play the concert.)
So now I’m in the 4-day weekend, projects to do at home (like installing the air conditioners). Musical Comedy Murders tonight, QUO on Saturday (as an audience member, I hope), and Rent on Sunday. That’s plenty.
I’m also moving forward with Pinafore. I hung out at the office yesterday for an extra hour before going to rehearsal and managed to print the entire full score on 11×17. Larceny for the arts, baby.
I will continue to test for COVID. My sinuses have been weird, but I think that’s directly attributable to the many many tiny flecks of pollen I can see on my glasses. It doesn’t feel like COVID at all.
And you should also go see Musical Comedy Murders, the QUO concert and Rent.
